On 1 November 2006, Alexander Litvinenko shared a restaurant meal in London with two Russian agents. Afterwards he fell ill, was hospitalised and died some weeks later, becoming the first confirmed victim of the lethal poison polonium-210. His deathbed accusations that Vladimir Putin was behind his poisoning resulted in worldwide media coverage.
Paul Barwick's talk on the death of Alexander Litvinenko recounts one of the most notorious incidents in the murky world of international espionage. Litvinenko was a spy with the Russian KGB. In 1998, he and several other Russian intelligence officers said they had been ordered to kill Boris Berezofsly, a Russian businessman. After that, the Russian government began to persecute him and he fled to the UK, where he criticised Vladimir Putin and joined British intelligence.
