“Dialect historian Charlie Haylock is known for his entertaining talks, books and CDs. As well as for having trained Ralph Fiennes to perfect the Suffolk dialect on screen in the 2021 movie The Dig, Charlie has become renowned for his work chronicling native words and phrases. He combines an encyclopaedic knowledge of the roots and development of our tongue with a rakish wit.
“This is not a talk on split infinitives, and what the differences are between the past participle and the past tense. Definitely not! Charlie shows how the seeds of spoken English were first sown, and how each invading force affected the English language with the different sounds they brought. Charlie includes a dialect tour of the British Isles, demonstrating the different facial expressions of each dialect. He also shows how some people he knows that lip read can tell what dialect a person has.”
